Garnets are a group of semi-precious gemstones that come in a wide range of colours. Chemically, they are silicates, and based on the combination of metal ions, they are separated into several species.

Today’s post is Grossular (calcium/aluminium) and Pyrope (magnesium/aluminium).

There are a few varieties of Grossular, based on colour:

  • Hessonite (“Cinnamon Stone”) — brown/red to orange/yellow
  • Rosolite — pink
  • Tsavorite — green

Pyropes come in various shades of red, ranging from cherry red to purplish hues to almost black.
